Final Wallpaper

I have finally finished sewing the wallpaper, it took about 30 hours all together and my fingers are killing, but I think the over all finish is really beautiful and i'm really happy with it, I have posted a few images below so you can see what the wallpaper looks like rather than vector images.

Wallpaper 3 print swatches & walldrop

Now I have established my final design and what the wall drop will look like, I needed to choose what colour swatches I would take forward. I didn't want anything overly bright, i wanted to stick with quite neutral and muted colours as much as possible, but still to get a variety within it. I think I have picked some really string colours, following the above, I have also decided that I am going to keep the laser cut pieces the same colour throughout, the only think I may change would be the colour of cotton to sew the pieces onto the wallpaper, but I will decide this when I see the documents next to the black cotton.

Walldrop & Laser Cut pieces

I have really struggled with coming up with different ideas for the final wallpaper, especially as there is limited time left, I really liked the idea from the second development so I went away and looked at different background to see how this could potentially work. I have decided on the below design for the 3rd wallpaper in the collection. The initial backdrop will be printed on thick high quality paper, originally I wanted to screen print the colour onto the paper to be in keeping with the expensive and luxurious feel the bespoke wallpaper should have, however timing issues and print jobs have backed up the system meaning I could have an over night digital print job, but this would not leave me enough time to screen print, so I decided I would take the slot and have the final back drop as a digital print. Within each circle are the second image, which are laser 3 separate shapes laser cut, they will be layered on top of one another then hand sewn onto the paper. I have decided to use tracing paper for this to create depth between the layers. I am really happy with the final design as it takes on a completely different and more modern theme than the earlier 2 designs, this is much more abstract which I felt was necessary when producing a bespoke wallpaper.

Design Idea

I was struggling to think of how I could make my designs into a bespoke wallpaper, so I went back to my earlier context posts to see if they could steer me in some sort of direction, when I came up with this design. The wall drops need to look expensive and have something a little bit special about them. The idea behind this design would be to screen print glow in the dark ink across the background leaving a faint green colour to the stock and then to laser cut the individual shapes of which you can see below in two different sizes and sew them onto the wall drops. This would create a really beautiful shadow where the shapes lift off the page, I would have to experiment with how this would work and the possibility of using the laser cutter as its so busy at the moment.

Wallpaper 3 Design Ideas

The final wallpaper in my collection is to be a bespoke, top of the range wallpaper. Normally I have found through my research these wallpapers are one offs which are used as wall drops and not necessarily stuck to a wall or in fact used as a wallpaper. Baring this in mind I have the chance to be more experimental about my design and can take into consideration more handcrafted an delicate production methods. I have decided to use existing design development which I have not taken on to final stages for this wallpaper. This will enable me to use and develop work from early on in the brief and to consider work which was not appropriate for the first two wallpapers.

One of the things I loved from the very beginning of this brief were the original rubbing I collected and later developed patterns on, I wanted to try and use them in some way through this brief, I really love the rawness from the rubbings and how uneven they are, they look really beautiful with the slate grey graphite stick I used. I have placed 3 different tyre patterns out, to try and get some individuality from them and a sense of how to make them bespoke.

In terms of making these designs into bespoke wallpapers, I would really like to see them screen printed in a dark metallic silver on some tracing paper, so the light can seep through where the rubbings have missed the page and then hand sewn on top the with some thick embroidery thread, picking out the detail on parts of the tread marks. This would be a collection of some really beautiful wallhangings, however I am a little concerned that this moves too far away from the first two wallpapers, where patterns have been mapped out around tyre related objects.

Colour Experimentation

As I mentioned on the previous post, I am screen printing the second wallpaper so the colour ways are quite hard to produce thorough photoshop, asI have a larger variety and more specialist inks available to me through screen printing. However I have experimented with some colour ways to see how well they work together before taking my work to print. Ultimately I can not decide now what colours I will be using, however I do no at this point I want my large wall drop to have the most expensive look it and for this I am going to print it in gold, the swatch colours I will base and decided around the colour options available to me, sticking as close as I can to the indian colour range and theme if this wallpaper.

Colour Experimentation

From the pattern development I have decided to move forward with the below design, I choose this as I felt it was the most successful design to be used across a wall and it for me have the most interesting qualities. So baring this in mind and the theme of the wallpaper, I needed to look at different colours to see what was appropriate. However whilst doing this I needed to remember that this wallpaper would be screen printed so the colours available to me are much wider in terms making the ink more special using metallic or pearlescent.

The first colour way is Hot Pink, this has been a favourite of mine since I began the research process on paisley patterns. I really like how vibrant and attention grabbing the colour is. There are some issues with using pink, firstly the digital wallpaper main colour way is Pink, so it wouldn't be wise to re use the same colour and secondly, I wanted this pattern to have a more neutral feel to it attracting both males and females and pink obviously doesn't do that. So in terms of the large wall drop print out I couldn't use it, but it is a potential swatch colour.

This second colour way is a deep yellow, however I have only used this to represent gold ink, I think to use a metallic colour on the main drop would help show off the piece as an expensive and luxurious wallpaper. The link would also be found in traditional paisley patterns and Indian designs. This colour way would really help support the theme of the wallpaper enforcing the paisley design. A final point to make here would be that the colour would be very neutral which I mentioned was something I wanted above for this design. I also find that this would help the wallpaper be suitable for a variety of rooms in the house and not juts one.

Purple was another common colour in my research, this perhaps doesn't work as well as it could on a white background, which is something I will develop later on, however the purple does look really beautiful with the pattern, but I am not convinced it would be a successful colour way used as a wallpaper.

Finally I have chosen green, unfortunately this isn't as luminous as I would have liked but that can be altered at the print process, I really like the use of green on context patterns I have found, however similar to teh purple working on its own with a plain background, it does'nt seem to work as well as some of the earlier colour choices.

Wallpaper 2 development

I felt it was appropriate at this point to experiment with the more abstract shapes which still reflected the paisley designs. I started this off in a very similar way to the earlier patterns, I used the new shape and followed the traditional paisley design. This looks much more contemporary and random than the previous style. I think in some ways this works much better because of the contemporary feel, it will appeal to a wider audience.

Moving on from the traditional paisley style I looked at some repeat patterns to see how the new contemporary look would work in comparison to the previous patterns. The below design doesn't work very well, the singular shapes remind me of prawns I think this is probably because they site alone next to white space, so I am going to develop this without so much white space.

As well as reducing the white space, I have also enlarged the shapes as the above ones were too small. This works much better than the original design, I think it helps that the shapes weave out of one another. However I do at this pint feel the top design is the strongest for this set of patterns. On the publication side of things, I do feel that the earlier design are much stronger for my brief than these.

Wallpaper 2 development

After developing some very traditional paisley patterns I felt it was necessary to develop some designs that had a more contemporary look to them. This first design, follows a very traditional wallpaper repeat pattern. It does work well and suits the style of the shapes, however my concerns lay with the fact its not very striking, which is definitely something I want from my work.

I decided my new aim from my designs would be to produce something more striking and individual which would help show the intricate patterns on the shape off. This second design again is based on a repeat pattern, but the individual shapes from a flower shape, this works far better than the above pattern, there is something far more interesting to it than the first. However my only concern with this design is that Wallpaper 1 follows a flowery design and I one thing I did state was that all my wallpapers followed a different theme.

Wallpaper 2 development

I decided it was time to start experimenting with the shapes and putting them into patterns, especially as I had established a theme early on in the design process. Before I jumped straight into pattern development I felt it would benefit my work by looking at traditional paisley patterns to help with the fluidity of theme and design. I think this has really helped my experimental process as I feel I have immediately come up with successful designs. I think it helps that this theme is so strong and the paisley shape weaves in and out of each other really well. This first design I looked at using different sizes, which works really well it allows for the detail in the shapes to become more intricate with the different sizing of the shapes.

The second design, is very similar to the first but I have used only one size throughout the design. In some ways I feel this has a more professional quality to it and is more typical of a wallpaper design, however I do need to remember that these are only extremely small examples of what the real life designs look like. Taking this into consideration the first design would probably prove far more interesting across a large wall space.

Crit Feedback

The crit today was suprisingly helpful, I went into it thinking I new what I was doing and just wanted to get on with it. At this design stage I am nearing the end with 2 of my briefs, but I wasn't sure these were large enough to be classed as substantial briefs, one thing I wanted to get out of this crit was suggestions on weather they thought they were and if not how I could make them substantial. I got some really positive feedback on my work and am finally feeling really excited about it and what I am doing.
