18th century wallpaper

The eighteenth century brought much lighter wallpaper and with it came chinese themed decoration and scenic panoramas. flocked wallpaper was introduced which made manufacturing much more complex with different surfaces and textures being used on different papers. The first image is influenced by the chinese decoration, it looks more hand painted and very typical of the century using an image of a theme rather than a pattern. This is probably my least favourite century even though this has a big turning point for the production for wallpaper.

I have found these old photographs and they were taken in 1938, the wallpaper is from the 18th century its shows a really clear example of the panoramic scenes that were popular. We would probably class this as a 'wall covering' now but you can really see how the scene brings the room to life. Again this style reminds me of historic scenic paintings, which in a way the are but these are mass produced pieces of paper stuck to the walls.
