Hi Anna,

We print onto a specially manufactured paper designed for solvent ink based printing machines. Our process is quite different to that of a typical wallpaper manufacturing company in that we produce our products specific to a clients requirements and thus our volumes are a lot lower. The wallpaper you might buy in DIY stores like B&Q is produced on mass scale and techniques like lithographic, flexographic and screen printing would be suitable for producing these types of wallpaper. We use a digital printing method instead as this allows us to produce far lower quantities without incurring hefty set up costs. We apply a laminate to the wallpaper to protect it and preserve the inks for a longer period. (although even without the laminate the inks would still look good for up to 100 years.) I found a great link on Google that goes into a lot more detail about different printing techniques: http://www.wallpaperinstaller.com/printing_methods.html Knowing about all of these techniques will make you a much better graphic designer as you'll be able to design according to the limitations of each process.

Profit margins vary on different types of wallpaper. When it comes to working out the selling price, things like square metre price, margin for error, time on press, company overheads and comparisons with competing businesses all attribute to the final cost that the product will sell for. To answer your question regarding whether wallpaper has a big profit margin, it really depends on how low you can get your production costs without compromising on quality and remaining competitive against other businesses. We operate at fair margins for ourselves and for our clients. Other companies will sacrifice on quality in order to achieve greater margins - we don't agree with this.

I also run a printing.com franchise. Printing.com specialise in lithographic printing and you can watch a video of their facility in Manchester here : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kZ-sS4cDtPQ (there is no sound in the video as we use this during presentations to clients and talk over the video while it is showing)

I hope that this answers most of your questions.

Kind regards,
